German for Beginners: At School (In der Schule)

This lesson teaches you the most useful German school vocabulary and the phrases you need in a classroom: asking questions, understanding instructions, and talking about subjects and objects. If you are learning German as a beginner, “school words” are perfect because you can use them immediately in real conversations and simple sentences.

Tip: learn the noun with the article (der/die/das) and read the example sentences aloud.

1) Classroom objects (die Schulsachen)

These are the most common items you see in a classroom:

2) People at school

Simple words for the people you meet at school:

3) School subjects (die Fächer)

Here are common subjects. You can use them with: Ich mag … / Ich habe …

4) Useful classroom phrases (super common)

These phrases are perfect for A1 learners:

Entschuldigung! — Excuse me! / Sorry!
Wie bitte? — Sorry? / Pardon?
Ich verstehe nicht. — I don’t understand.
Können Sie das wiederholen? — Can you repeat that? (formal)
Kannst du mir helfen? — Can you help me? (informal)
Was bedeutet das? — What does that mean?
Ich habe eine Frage. — I have a question.
Ich weiß es nicht. — I don’t know.

5) Instructions you will hear in class

Teachers often say:

Öffnet bitte das Buch. — Please open the book.
Schreibt das auf. — Write that down.
Lest den Text. — Read the text.
Hört zu. — Listen.
Arbeitet zu zweit. — Work in pairs.
Macht die Übung. — Do the exercise.

Mini dialogue:

Lehrer: Öffnet bitte das Buch auf Seite 10.
Schüler: Entschuldigung, welche Seite?
Lehrer: Seite zehn.
Schüler: Danke!

6) Quick grammar: “in der Schule”

The phrase in der Schule means “at school / in school.” You also often hear:

in die Schule gehen — to go to school
in der Klasse — in the classroom / in the class
auf dem Tisch — on the table

Examples:

Ich bin in der Schule.
Ich gehe in die Schule.
Das Heft ist auf dem Tisch.
