Telling the Time in German (Uhrzeiten)
Time is one of the first “real life” topics you need for appointments, travel, and daily routines. German has two common ways to say time: a digital style (14 Uhr 20) and a spoken style (zwanzig nach zwei). Learn both to understand natives easily.
Ask the Time
- Wie spät ist es?
- Wie viel Uhr ist es?
Digital Time (Clear & Simple)
- 08:05 → Es ist acht Uhr fünf.
- 14:30 → Es ist vierzehn Uhr dreißig.
- 21:10 → Es ist einundzwanzig Uhr zehn.
Spoken Time (Very Common)

| fünf nach zwei | five past two | 2:05 |
| viertel nach zwei | quarter past two | 2:15 |
| halb drei | half past two | 2:30 |
| viertel vor drei | quarter to three | 2:45 |
| fünf vor drei | five to three | 2:55 |
Important: halb drei = 2:30 (half to three), not 3:30.
Useful Phrases
- Wir treffen uns um 18 Uhr. (at)
- Ich arbeite von 9 bis 17 Uhr. (from … to …)
- Der Zug kommt um 10:12 an. (arrives at)
