German Grammar Basics (Part 2)

This lesson continues the basics and focuses on the rules that give you the biggest improvement fast: verb position, questions, negation, and a few common structures you can reuse. German grammar becomes much easier when you learn it through patterns.

Verb Position: The Golden Rule

In normal statements, the conjugated verb is usually in position 2. That means it is the second β€œidea,” not always the second word.

  • Ich lerne Deutsch.
  • Heute lerne ich Deutsch.
  • Am Montag arbeite ich im BΓΌro.

Yes/No Questions

In yes/no questions, the verb goes first:

  • Kommst du morgen?
  • Hast du Zeit?

W-Questions

With question words (wer, was, wo, wann, warum, wie), the question word comes first, then the verb:

  • Wo wohnst du?
  • Wann beginnt der Kurs?
  • Warum lernst du Deutsch?

Negation: nicht vs kein

  • kein negates nouns with an article β†’ Ich habe kein Auto.
  • nicht negates verbs/adjectives/adverbs β†’ Ich komme nicht.

Useful Beginner Structures

  • Es gibt… β†’ There is/are…
  • Ich mΓΆchte… β†’ I would like…
  • Ich brauche… β†’ I need…
  • Kann ich…? β†’ Can I…?

Mini Practice

  • Heute ____ ich Deutsch. (lernen)
  • ____ du morgen Zeit? (haben)
  • Ich habe ____ Kaffee. (kein / nicht)
