German Personal Pronouns (Personalpronomen)

Personal pronouns replace nouns so you don’t repeat names all the time. They are among the most-used words in German, so learning them early gives you a big jump in speaking and understanding.

The main rule to remember: German pronouns change depending on the case (the role in the sentence). Most beginners need three cases first: Nominative (subject), Accusative (direct object), and Dative (indirect object).

Nominative Pronouns (Subject)

The nominative is the subject — who does the action (Wer? / Was?).

ich	I	Ich lerne Deutsch.
du	you (informal)	Du bist müde.
er	he	Er kommt aus Köln.
sie	she	Sie arbeitet heute.
es	it	Es regnet.
wir	we	Wir haben Zeit.
ihr	you (plural, informal)	Ihr seid freundlich.
sie	they	Sie wohnen hier.
Sie	you (formal)	Wie heißen Sie?

Tip: Sie (formal “you”) is always capitalized.

Accusative Pronouns (Direct Object)

The accusative answers: Wen? Was? (whom? what?).

du	dich	Ich höre dich.
er	ihn	Wir kennen ihn.
sie	sie	Ich besuche sie.
es	es	Ich mag es.
wir	uns	Sie ruft uns an.
ihr	euch	Ich treffe euch morgen.
sie / Sie	sie / Sie	Ich sehe Sie.

Dative Pronouns (Indirect Object)

The dative answers: Wem? (to whom?).

du	dir	Ich helfe dir.
er	ihm	Das gehört ihm.
sie	ihr	Ich danke ihr.
es	ihm	Das passt ihm.
wir	uns	Sie erklärt uns die Regel.
ihr	euch	Ich antworte euch.
Sie	Ihnen	Ich schreibe Ihnen.

Word Order: Dative + Accusative

If both objects are pronouns, German usually uses: dative first, then accusative.

Er gibt mir es.
Ich erkläre dir das.

If one object is a noun, the pronoun often comes first: Er gibt mir das Buch.

Common Mistakes

❌ Ich sehe er. → ✅ Ich sehe ihn.
❌ Er hilft mich. → ✅ Er hilft mir.
❌ mit sie → ✅ mit ihr
❌ sie (formal) → ✅ Sie
